A 3.82 mile guided walk through the civic and cultural sites of Mt.
Pleasant's "New Village" in celebration of National Trails Day and the
Piccolo Spoleto and Spoleto Arts Festivals. Using the
I'On
Westwalk community walking trail, guide William Hamilton will show how places
like the Mt. Pleasant Amphitheater, Holy Ascension Orthodox Church, the
commercial Square, Marshwalk, Maybank Green and Avant Garden function together
to enable civic and cultural activity within a new urbanist residential
neighborhood. Bring water and wear comfortable walking shoes. Free. You can

Walk 10 miles in the New Village April 28 & 29
Mt. Pleasant, SC- The Westwalk I’On
community walking trail will be officially opened on the weekend of April 28
and 29, 2007 with a series of three walks totaling ten miles which will take
participants through the “New Village” in and around the I’On Community in
Mt. Pleasant, SC. The guided walks will be free and open to members of the
interested public. These walks commemorate the 10th. anniversary of the I’On
Community. Children capable of making the walk are welcome. Full information

The event will begin at Bodacious Bagels in the BI-LO Plaza on Shelmore Blvd.
at 9 am Saturday morning, April 28 with a guided tour of East Walk I’On, the
original 4.2 mile trail through the Eastern half of the I’On Community opened
in 2002. This tour will cover the Eastlake Neighborhood, Rookery, I’On
Square, the Marshwalk and Shelmore. The Eastwalk trail guide is downloaded
over 100 times per week. This trail has introduced thousands of people to the
new urbanist planning concepts that created a walkable, connected community

Saturday afternoon, beginning at 2 pm on I’On Square at 357 N. Shelmore Blvd.
there will be a short tour of two miles through some of the walkable
landscape surrounding I’On between the community and Highway 17, including
the nature reserve between I’On and the BI-LO Plaza, the Muirehead/Hobcaw
Round-a-bout and other nearby areas where sidewalks have knitted 1200
residences, three Churches, over 100 businesses and a school into a walkable
“New Village.”
On Sunday afternoon, April 29 at 2 pm, there will be a tour of Westwalk I’On.
This new 3.82 mile trail covers the Western half of the I’On Community,
including Perseverance Park, the Historic Graveyard, Indian campsite,
Westlake, Avant Garden, the Amphitheater and Holy Ascension Church. The
Westwalk I’On is GPS enabled, meaning an electronic route file can be
downloaded which allows walkers to navigate the trail with satellite

Large sections of both trails are on soft mulch or gravel surfaces, making
walking easy on the feet. Parking for all these walks is available on I’On
Square or in the nearby Bi-Lo Plaza. Guest Guides will contribute to the
experience along some of the walks during the weekend. The event will end
with a recognition program for those walkers who have completed all ten

Feb. 18, 2007
– Guided I’On Village Walk
There will be a
free guided exploration of the I’On– Guided I'On Village Walk trail on Sunday,
Feb. 18 beginning at 2 pm. The public is invited to gather for the walk on
I'On Square at 357 N. Shelmore Blvd. Mt. Pleasant, SC to begin the 2.5 hour
walk. Learn about local history, some community trivia and about the New
Urbanist theory behind the design of communities like I'On. Participants may
download a copy of the trail guide from www.ioncommunity.com or check a copy
out of the Charleston County Library. Call 849-8481 the morning of the walk
for walk status depending on weather. Along the way there will be some GPS
enabled treasure hunting. The walk will end with a dutch treat round at
O’Brion’s Pub.
Guide author William Hamilton will lead the walk with other guest guides for
portions of the trail.
The I’On Village Walk is a five mile community trail through I’On Village in
Mt. Pleasant beginning and ending on I’On Square. It takes visitors through
the rookery Wildlife Refuge, along the lake front paths and through over one
mile of the marshfront walk. Over half the distance is on soft surface mulch
and gravel trails. The trail was established in 2002 and its guide is
downloaded over 25 hundred times per year. Downloadable trail guides are
available for both adults and young readers. It is the longest walking trail
in Mt. Pleasant.
The walk will end with an
informal gathering at O’Brion’s Pub.

Geocaching Comes to the Village Walk
1-5-2003 - If you have a GPS unit, some additional fun can now be had along the village walk. See www.geocaching.com for details. The area's zip code is 29464, which you can use to search for the hidden caches, small collections of treasures which will delight children and challenge the adults trying to find them.. A total of six geocahing sites can be found in I'On. Two on the Village Walk (Rookery Micro and I'On Vision) and all six on the planned West Walk. There is also a letterbox along the trail. print out one of the PDF guides available online here or check a copy out of
the Charleston County Library. Over 100 copies a week are downloaded.
