Information on the Eastlake Open Kayak Races Sept. 29

Mt. Pleasant, SC - Kayak Enthusiasts will gather on the banks of Eastlake the I’On neighborhood of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina for a free afternoon of family fun and kayak racing ending with a festive concert at the new Mt. Pleasant amphitheater on Sunday, September 29.

This will be the second, annual Eastlake Open Race.  Last year’s races drew over 40 boats.   Prizes worth over five hundred dollars were awarded.  The races are sponsored by the Town of Mt. The Race of Twos

This year’s Eastlake Open Kayak Race on Sept. 29 will feature a special race for two person Kayaks between teams representing the six neighborhoods of I’On modeled on the

Palio Di Siena, the world famous horse race on the square in Siena, Italy.  Held since the 11th. Century, the Palio is a celebration of civic pride that sends jockeys wearing the colors of Siena’s 17 neighborhoods, or contrade,  in a mad, ninety second, three lap dash around the Piazza del Campo, Siena’s central square.  The entire population of the town watches.  The race culminates and highlights four days of civic celebration including massive dinners held in the narrow streets of the medieval town and a special blessing of the horse in the church for each contrade

The race of twos will take two person teams, chosen by each neighborhood, through two canals, beneath two wooden bridges, across two lakes and back to the boathouse.  Racing through the narrow canals is expected to be dramatic and competitive.

Non residents of I’On are invited to join a team and wear the colors of the neighborhood they wish to affiliate with and support.  Residents of each neighborhood will chose their team, but they may choose to race non resident “ringers” if they wish.  The winning team will receive a special, colored banner used as the finish flag for that day’s races which they will be able to displayas a trophy  in a prominent place in their neighborhood afterwards.

The Colors assigned to the neighborhoods for this race are:

I’Onborough – Green

Green

Ponsbury – Blue

Blue

Eastlake – Red

Red

Shelmore – Yellow

Yellow

Montrose – White

White

Westlake – Purple

Purple

Everyone is encouraged to wear the color of their neighborhood, to decorate their entry with it and to use towels of their neighborhoods colors.  Team members in the race must wear the color.

As Montrose and Westlake have virtually no residents at this time, Montrose will race with Shellmore and Westlake will race with Ponsbury, unless they decide to field their own teams
